Even though the ground is white and the plants are dormant, we know there are many gardeners out there who are looking forward to the greener days ahead.
Whether you are anxiously flipping through your seed catalogues, pinning gardening ideas on Pinterest or planning out your gardens on paper, a gardener’s mind is never truly dormant, regardless of temperature or weather. Taking the time to plan what you are going to grow and what you will need to have to create a beautiful and bountiful garden this growing season is an absolute must for gardening success.
Why not try to grow something this year that you have never tried before? Try adding in a new vegetable to your vegetable garden or a fruit tree or shrub to your property. Not only will this provide yourself and your family with a healthy and affordable food resource, it is also a great way to learn through doing while staying active close to home.
Did you know the Town of Amherst lends out snowshoes FREE of charge for daily and weekend sign outs?
You can borrow outdoor sports equipment as a part of the Town of Amherst Physical Activity Strategy and help build Amherst as one of the most active, healthy communities in Nova Scotia.
Snowshoes are available for lending at the Amherst Stadium, Cumberland YMCA and Four Father’s Memorial Library. Enjoy our outdoor spaces and trails, and keep active during the winter months.
We hope you all have enjoyed a very Merry Christmas and would like to extend our warmest wishes to you all for a very happy and healthy 2019.
Santa has come and gone, and a new year will soon be upon us. There is no time like the present to begin planning for a happy and healthy year in 2019. As part of our goal to be the most healthy, active community in Nova Scotia, we here at the Town of Amherst are happy to provide you with many resources to help get you outside and help you to stay active during the winter months.
We also hope to continue to brighten your nights and increase evening winter activities as we continue to illuminate Victoria Square and the downtown outdoor skating surface with our beautiful winter decorative lighting for all to enjoy.
Keeping up with the freezing temperatures can be challenging. To meet that challenge, dress in layers to stay warm, safe and dry when exercising in cold weather.
Staying active, even during the winter months, is also important. Give snowshoeing a try. Snowshoes are available for lending as part of the Town of Amherst equipment lending program. They can be signed out at the Amherst Stadium, Four Fathers Library or the Cumberland YMCA free of charge.
Other ways to stay active include venturing out on one of our trails, hiking through a field or putting in some laps around an outdoor walking track, such as the Big Block Walk. The 0.8-kilometre walk follows Victoria Street to Church Street to Prince Arthur Street to Havelock Street.
Amherst is in full swing with Holiday Spirit, which means time off to spend with your family and friends.
Why not spend it at the Amherst Stadium and our free public holiday skates while being active. Help us become the most healthy active community in Nova Scotia.
