Amherst to celebrate Canada Day on July 1

Canada Day is fast approaching!

Join the ‘A team on July 1 in your best red and white and come celebrate the big day!

The festivities begin with the opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. You do not want to miss it.

Lined up on Victoria Street will be a variety of vendors and games for all age groups. Live music will be performed in Victoria Square, so be sure to stop by and hear some of the local talent that Amherst has to offer. The day has something for everyone.

End your day surrounded by family and friends as you watch the fireworks show that occurs at dusk.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Intro to Tennis summer lessons that will start at the beginning of July.

The lessons will happen every Monday to Thursday morning throughout the summer at the Lion’s Park tennis courts.

The age categories to register are 6-8, 9-12 and 13-16.

The program is designed to teach new and develop already existing skills, such as the serve, front hand and back hand shots. There will also be fun tennis games to strengthen the skills learned in the lessons.

Summer program

Our summer program is out and available for the public now. Make sure you grab a copy and keep up to date with all of our upcoming events all summer long.

As you might have seen on the Amherst Recreation Facebook page, Music in the Park will be returning again this summer in Victoria Square. Starting on June 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come enjoy your lunch hour with some local music and stop by the First Baptist Church BBQ.

The summer multisport will kick off during the first week of July. Every Tuesday from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. meet the ‘A team at the Cumberland YMCA gymnasium to play a variety of sports and games. This afternoon activity is open for ages 7-12, and the best part of all – it’s free!

Active Family FunFAmily fun

You asked for it, so Active Family Fun will be returning this summer. Hooray!

We are so excited to see everyone out again this summer. This year, it will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Dickey Park.

There is a multitude of different things going on including “Surfs Up!” on June 26, our very own Treasure Hunt on July 3, Watergames and Geocaching, and so much more!

If this is of interest to you, we also have ‘Awesome Activities with the first one on July 9. Since it was such a huge success last summer, we are back offering another Tie-Dye Night at Beacon Park. Pre-registration is required as we have limited supplies, and it is BYOT (bring your own T-shirt). Plenty of fun to be had and lots of crazy creations await.

Science fun

Do you have a junior scientist at home? Then this program is for you!

Every Thursday in July from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., join a member of the ‘A team at the Beacon Street Park to explore all thing science with the July 4 session being All Things Chemistry, July 11- Brain Games and Trivia, July 18- DIY Lava Lamps and closing it out on July 25- Play Doh.
