Committee recommends amendment to policy

Amherst town council’s committee of the whole accepted a staff recommendation during its April 19, 2022, session to add a conflict-of-interest section to its Appointment of Members of Council to External Boards, Committees and Commissions Policy.

The amendment encourages all members of council/committees/commissions to consider the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act while performing their duties, defines what a conflict of interest is and outlines the steps they must take if a member believes they are in a conflict of interest.

The committee also approved sending the amendment to the April 25, 2022, council meeting for final approval.

IIHF World Hockey Championship

The committee directed staff to send a letter to the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Halifax-Moncton bid committee offering them the use of the Amherst Stadium as a venue for exhibition games and a team training camp.

The letter will note the town has recent experience hosting such events in past recent past. The stadium was the site of Team Czech’s training camp prior to the 2003 world junior championship, hosted a World Junior A game in 2009 and a World Junior A Challenge game between Team West and Russia in 2017.

The 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship was to be held in Russia, but its war with Ukraine led the IIHF to relocate the event. Halifax and Moncton have teamed up in a bid to host the championship.
