Sheila Christie, was newly elected to Amherst Town Council in 2016. During her first term in office, Christie served four terms as Deputy Mayor, (elected by her peers).
Christie has had a lifelong commitment to Amherst as a community volunteer. She has held key leadership roles with Relay for Life, Showcase Productions Society, Bright Beginnings Daycare, Engage Nova Scotia Committee, Amherst and Area Trails Society, Empowering Beyond Barriers, as well as memberships in local clubs, such as the Amherst Curling Club. Her volunteerism and her role as a financial controller for more than 32 years have helped to give her insight to the issues facing Amherst.
Sheila, who has lived in the Amherst area all her life, is not afraid to roll up her sleeves to get to work. While continuing to work full time, be a Town Councillor, she has continued her community work as the volunteer chair for the Fred Page Cup and has been at the grass roots of helping to formalize the Doctor Recruitment , Retention and Appreciation committees for our area hospitals. She is on the newly formed Nurses recruitment committee, has been involved in talks with the federal level of government about the future of the Col. James Layton Ralston Armoury and is currently helping with regional solutions for our Forestry industry.
Christie, who is in now in her second term on council, understands the importance of working together and is pleased with progress made to have all the municipal units in our area develop joint meetings. She also played an important role in bringing progressive programs, such as the ongoing Poverty Reduction work and “A Fresh Start” grants, forward. These programs were developed to help enrich the lives of Amherst's citizens. The future is limitless under effective, forward thinking guidance, and Christie is willing to put in the hard work to grow Amherst to its fullest potential.
