Enjoy the Snow

Did you know the Town of Amherst lends out snowshoes FREE of charge for daily and weekend sign outs?

You can borrow outdoor sports equipment as a part of the Town of Amherst Physical Activity Strategy and help build Amherst as one of the most active, healthy communities in Nova Scotia.

Snowshoes are available for lending at the Amherst Stadium, Cumberland YMCA and Four Father’s Memorial Library.  Enjoy our outdoor spaces and trails, and keep active during the winter months.

If you don’t want to walk in snowshoes, make your way to the Amherst Stadium and enjoy our popular walking track. It’s open seven days a week and you can walk for FREE. Walking times are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Coming Soon at the Amherst Stadium

 On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Amherst Ramblers will host the Pictou Weeks Crushers in a game that will be televised via Eastlink. Come join the fun at the Amherst Stadium as we look to fill the rink with loud, cheering, passionate fans.Rambler9 B

The game will be special as the Amherst Ramblers will honour Service Clubs and First Responders. This game will be themed “Community Service Appreciation Night.”

It’s guaranteed to be a family fun night at the Amherst Stadium.

‘A Place to Play…..Outdoor Skating!!!

The downtown “Outdoor Skating Surface” is back for another winter. This facility is equipped with decorative lighting, portable washroom, garbage cans and benches where you can tie your skates as well as a bleacher viewing area.

Due to our inconsistent weather, the outdoor skating surface maybe closed for maintenance at times so please follow us on Facebook for any notices or call 902-667-6500 for more information.

Please note: playing hockey on this surface is not permitted, but you can enjoy a nice leisurely skate.

 Want to stay Active during Cold Months?

 The Amherst Stadium is hosting a Learn to Skate Program.  Get familiar with ice, forward skating, backward skating and stopping. 

This is for those who have limited or no experience skating. The sessions take place on Tuesday’s from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. from Jan. 8 to Feb. 26, and it’s FREE.

If you’re not interested in the Learn to Skate program, no problem because an eight-week Adult Multi-Sport Program is being offered at West Highlands School on Wednesdays from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Enjoy some activity while playing basketball, volleyball, pickleball, dodgeball, floor hockey and much more. Winter Carnival Just Around the Corner

 The Town of Amherst will celebrate its fifth annual Winter Carnival from Feb. 12 to Feb. 18. There will be a number of activities planned around town for people of all ages and families to participate in. During our winter carnival we will celebrate Heart, Culture, and Play.

After The Bell Skating

Join us after school at the Amherst Stadium for skating, shinny hockey, ringette and walking.

This program is offered FREE in support of our community becoming the most active healthy community in Nova Scotia.  Monday, Thursday and Friday (2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.) skating and shinny, Wednesday (2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.) skating and ringette). Let’s move and be active.
