Two fast-charging EV charging stations now available behind Amherst town hall

The Town of Amherst has taken another step towards helping this town become a greener community.

It has installed two, electric-vehicle, Level 2, charging stations just off Laplanche Street, in the parking lot behind the Amherst town hall, at a cost of about $23,000.

“Council is acutely aware of the impacts of climate change and believe this project supports our goal of becoming a greener community,” Mayor David Kogon said. “It offers our citizens another place to charge theirEV 3 B electric vehicles.

“We believe the new chargers will help contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown by attracting owners of electric vehicles to this area as they plan their trips around where charging stations are located.”

The new Leviton Evr-Green 4000, dual-head charging station will join an existing one that has been in place since 2018. While the older one, which was donated to the town, is a “slow” charger, the new ones will be “fast” chargers that can charge most electric vehicles.

Vehicles equipped with a Standard Level 2 (J1772) charging port can receive up to 7.2kW or a maximum rate of 44 KPH (kilometers of Range Per Hour) depending on the vehicle.

A user consumption fee of $1.50 per hour will be charged to those using the new units, which covers the operating costs of the chargers. The charge is the same as that being charged by many other organizations in the Maritimes that offer the service.

The town was assisted in the project by the Clean Foundation Nova Scotia, which with the assistance of Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Infrastructure Program funding and the Province of Nova Scotia, provided $10,000 towards the project.
