The Indoor Walking Challenge continues through the whole week on the walking track at Amherst Stadium. Help us reach our goal of walking to Amherst Island, Ont.! Track your laps on the sign-up sheet and don’t forget to stop in to the stadium office for a ballot. You could win a Fitbit!
Join us Feb. 15 at the outdoor skating surface on Maple Avenue from 2-4 p.m. It will include skating, wagon rides and carnival games, Empire Theatre popcorn and Tim Hortons hot chocolate. Don’t forget to bring your own cup to help us help our planet! But don’t worry, if you forget, we will have cups available.
We also have Town of Amherst sponsored family bowling! Free for you to enjoy on Feb. 17. Be sure to call the King Pin Bowling Alley at 902-667-5678 to reserve your time in advance.
Our famous Chili Challenge is being held at Dayle’s Grand Market on Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. until noon. Things are sure to heat up as our local politicians battle it out to claim the title of Chili Champion. Come out and sample each one and cast your vote for the best.
A huge thank you goes out to all of our local community groups, partners and businesses for participating in this year’s winter carnival. What a great community we live in! It is sure to be a fantastic week for all to celebrate.

The month of February has been proclaimed African Heritage Month in the Town of Amherst.
This year’s African Heritage Month theme is: The Ties that Bind: Faith, Family and Community. It recognizes the unique bond people of African decent share through faith, family and community.
The theme also celebrates the longstanding legacy of faith and spirituality, acknowledging strong family ties and honouring the togetherness of the African-Nova Scotian community.
The Sand Hill Historic Walking Trail Exhibit was unveiled on Feb. 1 at the Cumberland County Museum as part of the launch of African Heritage Month in Cumberland County. We encourage you to learn the history of Sand Hill and engage in conversation about the historic trail as well as the benefits of connecting this heritage to recreation in our community.
