FLAGS AT HALF-MAST - The recent discovery of children’s remains at several sites of former residential schools across the country is shocking and traumatic.
The Town of Amherst, which acknowledges that it is located on the unceded, ancestral lands of the Mi’kmaw people, stands together with Indigenous communities across the country as we collectively mourn for these children and families.
Out of respect and in their honour, flags on town owned and operated properties have been lowered to half-mast and will remain there until further notice.
We urge our residents to reflect on this disturbing part of Canada’s history. We ask that you wear orange to show support for our Indigenous neighbours and please reach out to them to see how you can support them.
In addition, please take the initiative to further your own education and understanding about the disturbing role colonialism has played in Canada’s history.
Support is available for anyone who has been triggered by the latest reports through the 24-hour national Indian Residential Schools crisis line: 1-866-925-4419.
