Former councillor John P. (Jack) Matthews dies

John P. (Jack) Matthews, a longtime Amherst businessman, community volunteer and former town councillor has died.

“On behalf of town council, town staff and our citizens, I would like to offer our condolences to his wife, Jean, and his family,” Mayor David Kogon said. “Jack’s contribution to the town through his volunteer capacity, his business, Pridham’s Books and China, and as an Amherst town councillor is legendary. He took great pride in the Town of Amherst and always put his community first. He truly helped to make Amherst a great place to live, work and play."

Matthews served on town council from Jan. 13, 1964, until 1971. During that period, he served as the town’s deputy-mayor in 1966 and 1967.
