Michael Hunter appointed Amherst’s new chief financial officer

The Town of Amherst has a new chief financial officer.

Amherst resident Michael Hunter, CPA, CA, was appointed to the position on Oct. 14, 2020, during a special session of Amherst town council.

“We are excited to welcome Mike to the team,” Chief Administrative Officer Greg Herrett said. “His professional credentials, varied experiences and Michael Wilson Benthusiasm for the role is very impressive.

“We look forward to the important contributions he will make. He is a great addition to our senior management group and to our staff.”

Hunter, who will officially begin his duties on Nov. 9, 2020, said he’s always been interested in municipal organization and structure.

“I’ve done work with municipalities before,” he said. “I think this will be a really good opportunity to work with the public in the role of chief financial officer. I look forward to working with the team and to continue to support the community from within the town.”

The new chief financial officer has a bachelor of commerce from the University of New Brunswick, a chartered accountancy designation from the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy and a chartered professional accountant designation from CPA Nova Scotia.

Hunter has worked in the accounting field for the past 20 years, including the last eight years operating his own firm. He has a wide range of exposure to various accounting disciplines, including public sector accounting for municipalities, and has expertise with respect to technology systems, including evaluation, design, selection, construction and implementation of technology systems for information management.

Volunteering is important to Hunter. Over the years, he has volunteered with a variety of organizations including the Rotary Club of Amherst, Cumberland Health Care Foundation, Cumberland County Minor Hockey Association, the Amherst Rambler Jr. A Hockey Club, Amherst Adult Hockey League Association, Amherst Curling Club, Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northport Harbour Authority, the Community Credit Union of Cumberland Colchester and the Coldspring Heritage Society.

In 2011, he was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Cumberland Health Care Foundation in recognition of his community support.

Under the direction of the chief administrative officer, the chief financial officer is responsible for the overall efficient operation and strategic direction for finance, customer service, performance measurement and information technology.
