Kicking off this week is the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge.
Starting on May 31 and going until June 16, the Town of Amherst is going head-to-head against communities from across Canada who, through the “Community Better Challenge,” are seeking to be recognized as Canada’s Most Active Community.
The winner of that title will be awarded $150,000 for local physical activity initiatives.
Five regional winners will also be crowned. These will receive $20,000 each to support local physical activity in the communities where they live, work and play.
The challenge is simple, download the ParticipACTION app and start moving during the two weeks to help Amherst log the most physically active minutes. Activities such as walking, running and even housecleaning count toward our goal. Each individual is able to log as little as one minute, with the maximum time per session being 180 minutes per person.
Throughout the challenge period, join the ‘A’ Team at one of the many events we’re hosting. The first one supporting active, healthy Amherst is a community trail walk led by the Amherst and Area Trail Society on Saturday, June 1.
The walk will begin at 9 a.m. Everyone will meet in Victoria Square and begin the walk together. Be ready for bird watching and bring your cameras to take pictures. If you upload a few action shots be sure to add #seewhyweloveit so people everywhere can see the fun happening in our community.
The Family Sunset Run is happening on Thursday, June 6. It is an event you do not want to miss! The starting point is the Amherst Stadium, where registration starts at 6:15 p.m. and race begins at 7 p.m.
The run/walk is inclusive to all abilities and ages. Being only three kilometres long, it is the perfect distance to test your abilities while helping you build endurance for other upcoming runs.
In addition, it will be an event that can be logged as part of the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge, so be sure to attend as every minute counts.
The event is offered at no cost in support of active, healthy Amherst. All you need to bring is you, a positive attitude and be ready to get active while having some fun!
Active Amherst Community Night is happening at Dickey Park on Friday, June 7, starting at 6 p.m. and going until 8 p.m.
Join us and our various community partners for a walking challenge, soccer, basketball, disc golf, road hockey, Zumba, yoga and so much more! We look forward to seeing you be part of our effort to be one of the most active healthy communities in Canada.
