What's Up Rec?

Rec Department planning some great summer events

It seems the warm weather has finally found us, and as you can see our greenery is back – hooray for that!

Warm weather doesn’t only bring out the greenery though, it also brings out our Summer Student Leaders!

The Amherst Recreation Department is busy working with community organizations to bring some great events for the whole family to enjoy this summer.

Here’s a sneak peak:

Indigenous Peoples Day will be held on Friday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The opening ceremony will begin at the Four Fathers Memorial Library, followed by a parade to Victoria Square for a powwow.  Be sure to check out an amazing event.Indigenous dancer b

We will be hosting our Canada Day celebrations Monday, July 1, at Victoria Square from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come out and join us to celebrate Canada! The opening ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The Canada Day festivities will include music from the Mark McMillan Band from noon to 2 p.m., followed by music from Liz & Ben from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be games, activities, vendors, bouncy castle fun, an ‘A’ photo booth and fireworks at dusk. The ‘A’ Team is looking forward to seeing everyone there and helping to support our active health community.

As you may have noticed, our family first student leaders have been out and about on their bikes already this summer. They are busy planning events and summer programs to make sure we have lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy!

Some of the upcoming activities include: the outdoor movie on the big screen on June 21. We will be playing Avengers: Infinity Wars in Victoria Square at dusk. We will also be having our music in the park each Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’re interested in performing or want more information, email This email address is being protected from spambots. Our students are also busy in the parks, on the playing fields, in the stadium and throughout the town, keeping them all in good shape for our residents to enjoy.

Each of our summer student leaders is working hard to maintain our clean, green and tidy standard throughout Amherst. We are achieving this goal through daily litter pickup, turf maintenance and flower bed maintenance – what ‘A’ great job they are doing so far.

We will be continuing to work on our walking trails and walking tracks in the coming weeks to repair washouts from recent rains and ask that you bare with us during this time.
