Town seeking full-time Recreation Director

RECREATION DIRECTOR SOUGHT - The Town of Amherst is seeking a talented Director of Recreation to join the senior management team. This is an exciting opportunity to provide strategic leadership in recreation and community engagement to the Town and community. The Director of Recreation will have the responsibility to continually develop and manage a community recreation service, and ensure that there is a sustainable recreation business strategy which promotes and reflects the needs of the community and residents of the Town of Amherst.

Reporting to the CAO, the Director will have responsibility to plan, direct, measure and manage the activities, operations, staff and facilities of the Recreation Department including recreation, leisure and cultural programs and services, partnership development, facilities and parks management, special projects and administrative services consistent with the Town’s resources and plans.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage budgets and drive cost efficiencies within the department, and develop a business plan to promote the Recreation and Parks strategies consistent with citizen engagement and measurable outcomes and priorities;
  • Create a sustainable recreation program for an active community;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate programs and services offered by the Recreation Department;
  • Recommend policies and procedures that enable the department to effectively manage and respond to the growth and development of the Town, and promote Town policies and priorities such as staff health and safety, and financial sustainability;
  • Identify and develop opportunities for program partnerships with community and corporate agencies;Identify and develop opportunities for program partnerships with community and corporate agencies;
  • Liaise with senior provincial and municipal government officials, consultants, and neighboring municipalities;
  • Lead the effort to plan, promote and execute Town led community events and facilitate the Town’s effort in supporting events led by community groups;
  • Actively engage the community through community groups including but not limited to service and sporting clubs, cultural associations and groups, Town residents and business owners.


Bachelor’s degree in Business, and/or Physical Education/Recreation/Bachelor’s degree in Business, and/or Physical Education/Recreation/Community Development Training, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a seniormanagement role preferably with a municipal or provincial government. Experience in managingmulti-purpose recreation and leisure facilities in a unionized environment an asset.

An equivalentcombination of education, training and experience, which would provide the required knowledgeand skills, may be considered. Course work or background in public administration or business isalso desirable.
