Amherst, N.Y., bicentennial recognized by Amherst, N.S.

Amherst Mayor David Kogon has signed a proclamation congratulating Amherst, N.Y., on its bicentennial.

The proclamation, one of 200 the American community hopes to proclaim when it kicks off its year-long 200^th birthday celebration on Jan. 1, notes that a bicentennial is a special milestone.

“We want to applaud Amherst, N.Y., for its distinguished history,” Kogon said.

Ninety-one years younger than its American counterpart, the Nova Scotia town’s proclamation notes that its older relation was officially created on April 10, 1818, and was a prosperous farming community that boasted seven grist mills, several saw mills a tannery, a boot and shoe factory and two forges.

During the 20^th century, Amherst, N.Y., grew into an urban community that today has 125,000 residents and is home to the University of Buffalo Campus.

“It is indeed an honour to pay tribute to Amherst, N.Y., as they celebrate this auspicious occasion,” Mayor Kogon said.
