POSITION:  Firefighter  - Full Time

DEPARTMENT:  Fire Department
REPORTS TO:  Fire Chief

The Town of Amherst has an immediate opening for a qualified Firefighter

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide fire protection to the residents of the Town of Amherst and the District 1 County coverage area, with the intent to reduce the loss of life, property and impact on the environment, by means of prevention and controlled extinguishment. The firefighter is responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions. The firefighter’s work includes routine duties in the daily maintenance of the fire station, vehicles and firefighting equipment. Considerable independent use of judgment and quick action is necessary in circumstances of extreme urgency. The firefighter shall be responsible for the operation of the firefighting apparatus and its related equipment, responding to dispatched fire calls, lay and connect hose lines, nozzles and direct water streams, raise and climb ladders, as well as the use of various types of fire extinguishers. And other related duties as directed by the Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Grade 12 or equivalent.
  2. Level One Certified Firefighter
  3. Level One Fire Investigation Certified would be an asset.
  4. Possess a valid N.S. drivers license, Class 5(minimum) with air brake endorsement and a good driving record.
  5. Must have a thorough knowledge of Amherst Town streets, water mains, hydrant locations, high hazard areas and high occupant structures.
  6. Must be in good physical condition.
  7. Must have ability to perform all duties under the scope of a firefighter.
  8. Working knowledge of firefighting and rescue equipment, operation of fire apparatus and pumps and their maintenance, with a minimum of 5 years firefighting experience.
  9. Must have a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate.
  10. Must agree to a Criminal Records Check
