Town of Amherst Staff Celebrates Earth Day with Community Clean-up

April 22, 2024

In celebration of Earth Day, Town of Amherst staff members gathered this morning to collect gloves and trash bags before heading out to perform a community clean-up.

“Earth Day is really every day of the year, but on April 22 we always encourage staff members and citizens to get out and do something good for the planet,” shared Amherst Mayor David Kogon.

Town of Amherst staff members take a break from cleaning up at Donald Avenue’s community garden.

In addition to Town staff, students and staff at Amherst’s four schools are participating in clean-up events today, as well as schools throughout Cumberland County.

Each participating school will be entered into a draw for a $100 contribution to their breakfast program.

After just a short time collecting garbage from area parks, green spaces, and the community garden, Town staff were able to fill the back of a pick-up truck with bags of refuse.

A community clean-up can make a big impact in a very short amount of time.

In addition to community clean-ups, there are many other actions that people can take to help support the planet. One idea is to walk, or carpool, as a way to reduce personal carbon emissions. Amherst is such a walkable, and cyclable, town – we’re going to see a lot more people out and about now that the weather is getting better, exercising and also choosing greener options.

Organizations such as Earth Day Canada (EarthDay.ca) are a great resource for ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day and make greener choices every day, such as community clean-ups, having a car-free day, or using alternate modes of transportation.

Both of the Electric Vehicle charging stations are often in use here at Town Hall, including today – which is especially meaningful on Earth Day as many people do their part to support our environment and increase the sustainability of our everyday activities.
