Annual Celebration Recognizes Amherst’s Many Dedicated Volunteers

April 18, 2024

Volunteers go above and beyond the regular requirements and give back to their communities in countless ways. This is the case across the country, but in Amherst it feels as if we are made of people who hold our community even closer to their hearts.

This is National Volunteer Week, and on Thursday night this year’s group of volunteer nominees gathered at a ceremony in Amherst to receive a token of appreciation and enjoy a moment in the spotlight.

“It’s amazing to see a group such as yourselves and hear the ways in which you enhance everyday life for so many residents of Amherst, young and old,” said Mayor David Kogon. “Thank you for taking the time to attend this event – it means a great deal that we acknowledge all of your efforts, because you all help make Amherst the wonderful town we all so enjoy.”

Amherst’s Youth Volunteer of the Year is Kiahna Brennan. “Kiahna has been called a quiet soul who makes a great impact on her community,” said Mayor Kogon. “She volunteers just about every weekend with a children’s group here in Amherst to inspire others to pursue a mentally and physically healthy lifestyle.”

Kiahna is committed to the principles of inclusion, diversity, and equity; she has been a member of the Amherst Regional High School Social Justice Committee for three years, and for two years has been instrumental in coordinating the Red Dress Project for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. Kiahna has been an active member of the Amherst Youth Town Council, and has served on the executive as Secretary for two years.

“Our Volunteer of the year is Terry McManaman – affectionately known as Mouser,” Mayor Kogon announced. “Terry spent his sons’ formative years chauffeuring, coaching and fundraising for their various sporting interests. As his sons grew, Mouser kept serving his community. Now as a proud grandfather, his involvement continues.”

Terry’s efforts extend beyond sports and family as he regularly donates items and money to local benefits and fundraisers. He’s constantly cheering on kids of all ages, whether behind the scenes, on the sidelines, or out in front. He has balanced these achievements with his two previous careers at the School for the Deaf, and in corrections, and through his enduring marriage to Dawn.

“Mouser is a true Amherst asset. There are so many highlights to name, but I’m certain that his involvement at all levels of hockey and baseball rank high among his proudest moments. Not merely as a player and coach, but also as a true booster and member of the executive for minor hockey and little league, most recently,” said the Mayor.
