Amherst Fire Department seeking recruits

Now’s the time to fulfill your dream of becoming a firefighter.

The Amherst Fire Department is seeking people interested in joining the ranks of their dynamic team of volunteer firefighters.

“We are looking for people who like to take on challenges because the job of a firefighter can be both physically and mentally demanding due to the fact therecruit release 1 B job is performed in a variety of environments,” Fire Chief Greg Jones said.

“If you believe you have what it takes to be a firefighter, a job that can also be highly rewarding, then we look forward to receiving your application.”

Applicants must be 19 years of age or older, live within the primary response area of the Amherst Fire Department, be a Grade 12 graduate or equivalent and hold a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s licence. In addition, they must be able to pass a medical examination and complete criminal records check.

They must also be willing to attend weekly training sessions and complete a Firefighter Level 1 course within one year of joining the department.

The volunteer application instructions and procedures that are also located on the webpage state a firefighter is “responsible for firefighting, rescue and emergency medical and other related services” and “is responsible for rapidly, efficiently and safely performing various duties under emergency conditions” that frequently involve “considerable hazard.”

The instructions and procedures also include a list of duties and responsibilities of a firefighter “because we want the applicants to have a strong understanding of the role and job requirements of a firefighter in today’s society,” Jones said. “We are especially looking for people who have good communication skills, are flexible and value teamwork, co-operation and diversity.”

Once received, the application will be reviewed by the fire chief and an in-person interview may be scheduled.

Successful applicants will become probationary members of the department for a minimum of one year and will be required to have a medical exam completed at their own expense, within one month of their acceptance as a probationary member.

They must also be willing to join the Amherst Firefighters Association, an organization that helps support the department and other community groups through a variety of community-minded events and projects.
