Amendments to a policy and bylaw approved by Amherst town council
Amendments to a town policy and a bylaw were approved by the Amherst town council when it met on Monday, April 25, 2022.
The Appointment of Members of Council to External Boards, Committees and Commissions Policy was amended to include a conflict-of-interest section in the document.
The section encourages all members of council/committees/commissions to be aware of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, defines what a conflict of interest is and outlines the steps that must be taken if a member believes they are in a conflict of interest.
Approval to amend the bylaw was given when council gave second reading to an amendment to the town’s Bylaw Respecting Intrusion, Robbery and Fire Alarm Systems that deletes a section of the bylaw that required property owners to register their alarms with the police department.
The Amherst Board of Police Commissioners had previously recommended the approval of the amendment.
Appointments
Council approved the appointment of Jorgensen and Bickerton Chartered Professional Accountants Inc. as the town’s auditor for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. They also directed staff to present a procurement document for the 2022-2023 audit services to the audit committee no later than Oct. 21, 2022.
Coun. Lisa Emery was appointed as the town’s representative on the newly formed Cumberland Central Landfill Community Liaison Committee.
GFL Environmental Inc.’s permit to operate the landfill, located at Little Forks, requires them to set up a community liaison committee, which will engage the community on matters relating to the operation of the landfill.
The committee will consist of community representatives, company representatives and representatives from the towns of Amherst and Oxford and the Municipality of the County of Cumberland.
