Mayor proclaims Sept. 15-Sept. 21, 2019, as Zonta Week in the Town of Amherst

The Zonta Club of Amherst Area’s contributions to the Town of Amherst over a 35-year period were recognized with a proclamation and flag raising on Monday, Sept. 16, 2019.

“The local Zonta Club is part of Zonta International, a service organization with members in 63 countries who work together to advance the status of women, legally, socially and economically,” Mayor Kogon said, before reading the proclamation that declared Sept. 15-Sept. 21 as Zonta Week in the Town of Amherst.

“It is organizations such as the Zonta Club of Amherst who help make Amherst a great place to live, work and play, and enable us to say see why we love it.”

The proclamation noted that in the years since the local Zonta Club was formed in 1984, it has helped establish a transition house in Amherst and given donations to many local organizations including Maggie’s Place, the International Women’s Day Committee and the Dec. 6 remembrance event. It also noted the club continues to support Autumn House, provides annual education bursaries to mature women, sponsors young girls attending camp, supports the Amherst Food Bank Network and, in partnership with Easter Seals Nova Scotia, provides financial support to a mature woman attending Camp Tidnish.

Charter Zonta member Marg. E. Smith presented a brief history of the club. She explained that Zonta is a Sioux word “representing the symbols of trustworthiness, honesty, inspiration, radiance, shelter and the ability to work together for service and world understanding.”

She encouraged people to look at the Zonta exhibit that is located in the CANSA office window on Victoria Street.

Smith then joined Kogon, councillors Terry Rhindress and Jason Blanch, and other members of the club in raising the Zonta flag. It will fly over the town until the end of the week.
