Amherst Mayor David Kogon signed a proclamation on June 6 declaring the week of June 10 to June 16 as Pride Week in the Town of Amherst.
“By proclaiming Pride Week in this community, the town is recognizing that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Kogon said after signing the proclamation.
The mayor noted the town has a vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning community that has worked diligently with its allies to “encourage dialogue as a tool towards an inclusive society that celebrates diversity in the town and surrounding area.”
Amherst’s new fire simulator is so life-like, it’s already led one citizen to believe there was an actual fire.
“We’d just received the panel and had it on the floor simulating different types of fires,” Fire Chief Greg Jones recalled recently. “Someone driving by thought it was a real fire. He actually came into the station to report it.
“We showed him the simulator. He was impressed because from the street, he said it looked very real.”
A desire to be closer to family has led Bill Schurman to resign his position as the Town of Amherst’s recreation director, effective the end of June.
“This was a gut-wrenching decision,” Schurman said on June 3, after turning in his resignation letter.
“I’ve had a wonderful five years working in Amherst. I’ve met some wonderful people, worked with some wonderful people. I’ve had a great team around me and it’s been a blessing for me to be here. I love this job. I will always proudly where the ‘A’ wherever I go.
Amherst town council appointed Marc Buske as the town’s Building Official during its May 27 session.
Buske joined the town as its building inspector in June 2017. Since then he has been taking courses to become a qualified Building Official and he is now qualified to conduct inspections on and one- and two-unit residential buildings.
He continues to take courses towards being a fully qualified Level 1 and Level 2 Building Official. Upon completion of these courses he will be able to process all building permits for the town. Until then, the town will continue to use Municipality of Cumberland Building Officials to conduct inspections, with Buske’s assistance, on large residential and all commercial buildings.
