Town of Amherst supports new Little League T-ball field

The construction of a new Amherst Little League T-ball field has the support of the Amherst town council.

“We’re absolutely delighted to back this very worthwhile project that will see the T-ball field built on the site of the little league complex, between the fire station and the Art (Sonny) Foster Field,” Mayor David Kogon said, following a special council meeting on Sept. 6, 2022.

“Amherst Little League is a class organization. It has provided our community’s young citizens with a place to play baseball for free for more than 65 years. Having their own T-ball field will encourage even more youth to participate in this wonderful sports program and will help Amherst meet its goal of being the most active and healthy community in the province.”

The deal approved by council will see the town contribute a $10,000 community support grant towards the construction of the T-ball field. Amherst Little League also has a $70,000 grant from the Jays Care Foundation and $25,000 from the Province of Nova Scotia that will go toward building the field.

In addition, the town approved spending $7,000 towards the realignment of the Dickey Brook footbridge and walking trail, which are required in order for the T-ball field to be built.

Lastly, the town will contribute $3,000 worth of in-kind work on the base of the new outfield fence and will continue to mow the grass outside the baseball field playing areas and will co-ordinate and pay for the removal of solid waste from the site.

The council noted the T-ball field will allow for a consolidation of programming at the Amherst Little League complex, which currently has two little league-sized fields. Previously, some programs, such as T-ball, had to be played in other locations. By consolidating activities at the one site, council believes it will make participation more practical for families with multiple children and enable Amherst Little League programming to reach a broader audience.

While the third field will increase vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the Beacon Street-Croft Street area, the town and Amherst Little League will be encouraging citizens to park their vehicles in the fire department’s parking lot in order to alleviate any parking concerns on the two streets.
