Amherst police donate bikes to Bridge Adult Service Centre

What to do with about 50 unclaimed bikes?

That was the question facing the Amherst Police Department after exhaustive searches failed to find the owners of the bikes, some of which came into their possession as far back as 2013.

 “None of the bikes were reported stolen and every effort we made to find the owners was unsuccessful,” Deputy-Chief Tim Hunter said. “In the past, we would sell bikes like these at a public auction, but we thought this time that it might be better to provide them to a non-profit charity that could use them to support their organization.”

The department approached the Bridge Adult Service Centre, a local organization that has been providing programming for intellectually challenged adults since the 1960s, with the idea that they could use the bikes to help raise funds.

The organization gladly accepted the donation, which members of A Platoon, assisted by members of Amherst Public Works staff and service centre employees, delivered to the centre, located on Spring Street, on Thursday, June 23, 2022.

It took one trailer load and two truck loads to deliver the bikes, which will now be used in a fundraiser by the Bridge Adult Service Centre, with the profits going to help in the operation of the centre.

“We encourage you to drop into the centre, see the wonderful staff and purchase your bike,” Hunter said.
