Three community groups are in the running for one of the Town of Amherst’s new ‘A’ Fresh Start Community Initiative grants.
Representatives from the Amherst Area Heritage Trust, Amherst Valentine Run Committee and the Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County are now preparing the 10-minute presentations they will pitch to the public and council during a meeting scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Community Credit Unit Business Innovation Centre.
The Trust, in co-operation with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Museum, is seeking $2,064 to host “Art and War,” an exhibit showcasing original Arthur Lismer lithographs of the First World War.
A five-year funding agreement that will see the Town of Amherst provide an annual $100,000 grant to the Cumberland YMCA was signed by the two parties on Oct. 12.
“The Cumberland YMCA is an integral part of this community,” Mayor David Kogon said, prior to signing the agreement. “The programs they offer our citizens are top-notch and play an important role in helping council meet its goal of Amherst being among the most active, fit communities in Nova Scotia.
“Council believes this agreement will help to ensure the YMCA can continue to play the important role it does within this community well into the future.”
Banners bearing photographs of 34 veterans of Canada’s wars and peacekeeping missions will hang in places of honour in downtown Amherst in the weeks leading up to and following Remembrance Day.
“I didn’t think I’d get this emotional,” Mayor David Kogon, said upon seeing a banner bearing a photo of his late father, Flight Lieutenant Maxwell Kogon, a bomber pilot during the Second World War who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Viewing it, the mayor admitted, brought a lump to his throat.
