Amherst Fire Department seeking recruits

Now’s the time to fulfill your dream of becoming a firefighter.

The Amherst Fire Department is seeking people interested in joining the ranks of their dynamic team of volunteer firefighters.

“We are looking for individuals who like to take on challenges and are committed to being part of a team. Firefighting is both physically and mentally demanding due to the training and work that we perform in arecruit release 1 B variety of environments” Fire Chief Greg Jones said.

“If you believe you have what it takes to be a firefighter, a job that can also be highly rewarding, then we look forward to receiving your application.”

Applicants must be 19 years of age or older, live within the primary response area of the Amherst Fire Department, be a Grade 12 graduate or equivalent and hold a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s licence. In addition, they must be able to pass a medical examination and complete a criminal records check.

They must also be willing to attending weekly training sessions and complete a Firefighter Level 1 course within one year of joining the department.

Successful applicants will become probationary members of the department for a minimum of one year and will be required to have a medical exam completed at their own expense, within one month of their acceptance as a probationary member.

They must also be willing to join the Amherst Firefighters Association, an organization that helps support the department and other community groups through a variety of volunteer, community-minded events and projects.
