Town of Amherst Job Posting - Firefighter

POSITION: Firefighter

REPORTING TO: Director of Fire Services

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Director of Fire Services, the Firefighter is responsible for carrying out firefighting and fire prevention activities and for providing assistance in other emergencies. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing fire protection to the residents of the Town of Amherst and the District 1 County coverage area, with the intent to reduce the loss of life, property and impact on the environment by means of prevention and controlled extinguishment;
  • Rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions;
  • Routine duties in the daily maintenance of the fire station, vehicles and firefighting equipment;
  • Operating a firefighting apparatus and its related equipment, responding to dispatched fire calls, laying and connecting hose lines, nozzles and direct water streams;
  • Raising and climbing ladders and using various types of fire extinguishers;
  • Flexible scheduling on a 24/72 schedule format;
  • Performing other duties as directed by the Fire Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Must be a Certified/Qualified NFPA 1001 level 1 Firefighter (NFPA 1001). Experience as a volunteer firefighter is an asset.
  • Must have a valid First Aid, AED and CPR certificate.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted Class 5 drivers license with air brake endorsement and demonstrating a safe and responsible driving behavior via satisfactory driving abstract.
  • Must possess knowledge and experience in pump operations.
  • Excellent communications skills (written and verbal) with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of all Town streets, roadways within our response area, water mains, hydrant locations, high hazard areas and high occupant structures.
  • Working knowledge of firefighting and rescue equipment, operation of fire apparatus and pumps and their maintenance, with a minimum of 5 years' firefighting experience.
  • Must be in good physical condition and have the ability to perform all duties under the scope of a firefighter.
  • Candidates must provide a satisfactory criminal record with vulnerable sector check.
  • Must be a volunteer firefighter with the Amherst Fire Department.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $54,414 to $64,973 per year.
