Amherst town hall reopens for business

Amherst town hall has reopened to serve the public.

Closed three months ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the building at 98 Victoria St. E. reopened on June 22, 2020, some modification to accommodate public health protocols.

To ensure the protection of the public and staff, the following will apply:

• Public access to town hall is currently limited to between 10 a.m. and noon and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., Monday to Friday (excluding holidays). Beginning on Monday, June 29, 2020, town hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Customers making payments or dropping off or picking up documents, such as applications, are asked to access town hall through the main door marked Enter and leave via the main door marked Exit.
• After completing their business, customers are asked to depart the building as soon as safety permits.
• Only five customers will be permitted in the lobby at one time and the two-metre physical distancing requirment will be in effect.
• Customer meetings, other than reception, will be by appoinment only. Phone or video meetings are encouraged whenever possible.
• All appointments must be scheduled in advance.
• People requiring the use of accessbile entrance, making deliveries or attending a prearranged appointment are asked to enter town hall via the ramp on the left side of the building.

Markers and signage have been installed in the lobby to indicate physical distancing measures, as well as directions for entry and exit. Plexiglass barriers have also been installed in the reception area as an added protection for customers and staff. Increased sanitation measures are in place and hand-sanitizing stations are available.

As an alternative to making payments in person, there are a variety of options for bill payments that can be found on the town website or by calling 902-667-3352.

The town is asking residents to please be respectful of others and act with care and compassion as town hall and many of the businesses in our community begin their respective reopening processes.
