Walking track at Amherst Stadium to reopen

The walking track at the Amherst Stadium will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020, but it won’t be walking as usual because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have had to implement several changes in walking protocols in order to ensure the town follows provincial public health orders, protects the health of walkers and stadium staff and recognizes the unique characteristics of our stadium,” Jason MacDonald, Deputy-CAO/Operations, said.

The first of the changes, initially, is the walking track will only be available for use on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and the number of walkers permitted for each session will be limited to 10 people.Walking Challenge B

Users wishing to walk will also have to book a session by calling 902-667-3352 or emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The booking, which requires a name and phone number for contact tracing purposes, may be made up to one hour before the start time.

A user can only book one walking session at a time, but they may book sessions for other people provided the names and phone numbers of the other walkers are given at the time of the booking.

Walkers will enter and exit the stadium through the south-side doors. The doors will open five minutes before the start time of the session and there will be designated stairs for people to use to reach the walking track.

People who are mobility challenged are asked to make that known at the time of booking as stadium staff will have to open the main front door to allow them access to the facility.

Masks will be mandatory when walkers enter the stadium, but will not be required once a person is walking on the track.

The town encourages social distancing, but it is not required. Passing will be allowed and should occur on the right side of the person being passed.

The direction of travel will be marked on the track and running is not permitted. In addition, walkers will not be permitted to access the seating in the stands. Chairs will be positioned on the second level for the use of walkers.

People are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as the water fountain will not be available. A washroom on the second floor will be available.

“We encourage people to take advantage of the walking track and ask them to be patient as we implement these new protocols that are in place to ensure the health of our citizens,” MacDonald said.
