Albion Street infrastructure project set to start

A major infrastructure project by the Town of Amherst that will replace a century-old water main and reconstruct Albion Street, between Croft and Queen streets, is set to begin on Monday, June 29, 2020.

“This project will upgrade the water service we provide citizens in the area for many years to come,” Jason MacDonald, deputy-CAO and Operations Department director, said. “It will also enhance one of the town’s major travel arteries.”

Bowser Construction Ltd. began moving equipment into place on Friday, June 26, 2020, including the placement of detour signs. Their crews have also spent the past few days installing temporary water lines in the area.

In the coming days, they will be working with local residents to finalize the temporary water connections.

The crew will be starting with water valve instillations on Monday, June 29. As a result, there will be minor water service interruptions to some properties in the project area while this work is underway. Affected properties will receive advanced notice.

Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the project. Initially, all through traffic will be detoured via Queen, Croft and Albion streets.

Local traffic will be able to access all businesses and properties within the project area, but motorists must read the signage each time the enter or exit the project area. On street parking will not be permitted in the project area while crews are working.

The signage and detour routes may change as the work progresses. Traffic control will also be subject to change without notice.

The work is scheduled to be completed on or before Sept. 30, 2020. Generally, crews will be on site from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.
