Effective immediately, Tamara Porter has been appointed as acting Business Development Officer and will continue in that capacity until further notice, Greg Herrett, CAO for the Town of Amherst, announced on Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.
Ms. Porter holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in marketing and small business entrepreneurship from Saint Mary’s University and is well known in the community having worked in her family business in downtown Amherst for many years.

AMHERST, Nova Scotia – Mayor David Kogon has declared Feb. 9, 2020, to Feb. 15, 2020, as Family Violence Prevention Week in the Town of Amherst.
“Family violence, in its many forms, affects all people in the Cumberland region,” Kogon said as he signed the proclamation. “It causes physical and psychological harm, violates the victim’s rights and freedoms, and harms the healthy development of children.
“It is a public health issue, a criminal justice issue and a human rights issue. That is why I invite all the citizens of the Town of Amherst to share in the responsibility of ending the silence surrounding family violence by addressing violence in all its forms because we all benefit from a safe community.”
A combined water and general capital budget of slightly more than $2.8 million for the 2020-2021 fiscal year was approved by Amherst town council during a special session held on Feb. 4, 2020.
“We believe these capital projects are required in order to maintain our infrastructure and continue to provide the many services we do for the citizens of Amherst,” Mayor David Kogon said.
The town’s water department has budgeted $713,000 for three projects: replacing a water main on Albion Street, between Croft and Queen streets, purchasing a generator for the wellfield and a new service truck.

The month of February has been proclaimed African Heritage Month in the Town of Amherst.
“It is important that we take the time each year to salute the many valuable contributions African-Nova Scotians have made to the Town of Amherst throughout our history and to acknowledge that they continue and will continue to play an integral role in making Amherst a great place to live, work and play,” Kogon said, on Jan. 31 as he signed the proclamation in the presence of Elizabeth Cooke Sumbu, executive director Nova Scotia Works CANSA .
