Fire forced 20 residents from a downtown rooming house during the early hours of Monday, Nov. 1, 2021.
“We received the call at about a quarter to four this morning,” Greg Jones, Amherst’s director of fire services, said shortly before 5 a.m. “The call said it was a structure fire at 4 Prince Arthur St., so we rolled the full complement of the fire department.”
Coun. Sheila Christie was elected by her peers to a one-year term as the Town of Amherst’s deputy-mayor during the Oct. 25, 2021, council session.
Christie replaces Deputy-Mayor Hal Davidson, whose term as deputy-mayor ends on Oct. 31, 2021.
Community Support Grants totalling $6,000 were handed out by the Town of Amherst on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021, to three deserving community organizations.
The West Highland Home and School received a $3,000 grant, the Amherst Artisan Gallery received $2,250 and Trail for Treats received $750.
Amherst town council’s committee of the whole is recommending donation requests from two organizations be approved by the town council at its Oct. 25, 2021, meeting.
The first request was from the Dr. & Mrs. H.E. Christie Foundation, which asked the town to accept a $10,000 donation, with the condition it be forwarded to the Cumberland County Minor Hockey Association.
