Mayor David Kogon has signed a proclamation declaring February as African Heritage Month in the Town of Amherst.
“The provincial theme this year is Educate, Unite and Celebrate Community, and that is what we hope Amherst residents will do during February,” Kogon said. “We hope they, through the events organized by CANSA, will educate themselves on the important role African-Nova Scotians have played and are playing in the Town of Amherst.
Amherst town council committee of the whole briefs
Amherst town council has authorized its staff to call for tenders on three properties that did not sell during a tax sale in December. The properties are at 3 Fullerton St., 26 Park St. and 23½ West Pleasant St.
All of the properties had dangerous and unsightly premises charges applied to them as a result of orders from the town. All three also had buildings removed by the town when the owners refused to clean up their properties.
The Town of Amherst presented the United Way of Cumberland County with a $1,000 cheque on Jan. 9 in support of the charity’s Festival of Trees.
“It’s an honour to give this cheque to an organization that does so much to help area residents,” Mayor David Kogon said, as he handed the cheque to United Way president Dave March.
The Mayor, council and staff of the Town of Amherst wish to extend sincere condolences to the family of our CAO Greg Herrett for the loss of his sister Lori Herrett-Power. Lori battled leukemia and passed away early Monday. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this difficult time.
