“Last month, Coun. Vince Byrne reached a settlement agreement with the Nova Scotia Securities Commission with regard to their investigation in to his activities. This settlement agreement and the order of the securities commission is part of the public record and is available on the commission’s website and brings the matter to a close.
Amherst residents may get the opportunity to use the internet or a phone to cast a ballot during the next municipal election.
Council, at its February regular council session, passed the first reading of the Alternative Voting Bylaw, which would enable citizens to vote through the internet or via the phone during an extended advanced polling period during the 2020 municipal election.
A new policy affecting the appointment of councillors to external boards, committees and commissions was adopted by Amherst town council during its Feb. 26 regular council session.
The new policy does not apply to appointments and ad hoc committees of council – committee of the whole and the audit, planning advisory, north Tyndal wellfield advisory and tree advisory committees – but does delineate three levels of outside committees that councillors may be involved in.
Well-known teacher Daren White has been named Amherst’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year.
“Daren White is no ordinary human being,” Mayor David Kogon said Feb. 26 as he announced White’s selection. “By day, he’s one of those very special teachers who are admired by his peers and thousands of children for his creativity and enthusiasm.
