Five teams and 24 individuals were honoured by the Town of Amherst during an April 18 Athletic Achievers Award Ceremony.
Those recognized achieved a gold medal performance at the provincial or higher level of competition.
Noting the town was recently identified at an international symposium as a vibrant community, Mayor Kogon said the athletes’ success at the provincial or higher level was “a step beyond being vibrant and active. This is now success.”
Amherst’s deputy-mayor heaped praised on more than 40 volunteers who have striven to improve the lives of their fellow residents during an April 17 ceremony at the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre.
“You guys are the backbone of the community,” Sheila Christie said. “If we didn’t have volunteers like you, this community wouldn’t continue to be the kind vibrant community that it is.”
The Town of Amherst, Town of Oxford, and Municipality of Cumberland are forming a new Tourism Strategic Planning Committee to develop a tourism strategy that will maximize the value of tourism to the economy of the Cumberland Region.We are seeking six tourism industry professionals from a broad range of tourism sectors to sit on the committee for a term of approximately 8-12 months. Amherst firefighters and police officers responded to a house fire at 52 Willow Street on March 29.
The alarm was turned in at about 11:38 a.m. Initial reports indicated there was an explosion, but that has not been verified.
