Environment Canada has issued a tropical cyclone information statement and a special weather statement that state hurricane Fiona is expected to bring dangerous weather conditions to Amherst and the surrounding area later this week.
The storm is expected to affect the area between Friday evening (Sept. 23, 2022, and Saturday (Sept. 24, 2022). It is expected to bring severe and damaging wind gusts, very high waves, coastal storm surges and intense rainfall events.
Amherst’s greatest mystery will be celebrated in spooktacular fashion when the town hosts Esther Fest from Oct. 17, 2022, to Oct. 31, 2022.
Celebrating all things scary, frightening and ghostly, the festival is named after Esther Cox, a young Amherst woman who was the subject of reported poltergeist activity that gained international attention between 1878 and 1879 and was the subject of a book written by Walter Hubbell titled The Great Amherst Mystery.
The Town of Amherst has made the Amherst Lions Skatepark more user-friendly by installing a sun shelter and an outdoor drinking fountain at the outdoor recreational facility.
“Council is always seeking ways to improve our facilities and this improvement was suggested to council by the users of the skatepark,” Mayor David Kogon said.
Exquisite floral displays have painted Amherst in a blaze of dazzling colours this summer.
“We’ve received a lot of compliments from our citizens and visitors this summer on how attractive and appealing our flowerbeds, hanging baskets and planters are,” Mayor David Kogon said. “I’d have to agree. Our flowers have never looked better.
