Amherst Fire Chief Greg Jones has become one of only 74 fire chiefs in Canada to obtain the Executive Chief Fire Officer Designation.
The designation was bestowed on Jones by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs during a banquet in Ottawa on Sept. 19 that closed the annual Fire Rescue Canada conference. It acknowledges that he has the professional conduct, training, education and skills in a number of competencies that a leader in today’s fire service must have.
Those competencies are in the areas of leadership, human resources, governance, business acumen, finance, fire technical and fire prevention.
The Town of Amherst ended the 2017-18 fiscal year with a $558,000 surplus, according to audited financial statements accepted by Amherst town council on Sept. 24.
The main drivers for the surplus were municipal contributions to housing, which came in $101,900 under budget, wages and benefits, which came in $87,700 under budget, mainly due to vacancies that have since been filled, and, due to last year’s warm winter, the cost of fuel and natural gas, which came in $71,300 under budget.
Amherst town council, at its Sept. 24 council session, gave first reading to a development agreement at 99 West Victoria Street that would result in a garden suite being built in the property’s backyard.
A staff report indicated the proposed 109-square-metre suite would be located about 14 metres from the main dwelling unit and about 20 metres from the dwelling next door. It noted the driveway can accommodate about six vehicles, which exceeds the minimum requirements for parking.
