A petition calling on the provincial government and Nova Scotia Health Authority to do more to retain and recruit physicians to Cumberland County that was launched this week by the Cumberland Healthcare Taskforce has the full support of the Town of Amherst.
“The town supports the petition because the steps the taskforce is asking be done would enhance the ability to maintain specialists and recruit them to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre,” Mayor David Kogon.
“We need an active, dynamic regional hospital complete with a full complement of specialists in order for the Town of Amherst to remain vibrant and be able to attract business here. I can’t imagine a business coming here if we don’t have a vibrant regional hospital.”
Amherst town council awards Willow Street reconstruction tender
Amherst town council awarded the Willow Street reconstruction project to Beale and Inch Construction Limited during a special meeting of council on July 23.
Beale and Inch’s $1.8-million bid was the lowest of five qualified bids the town received from contractors when the tender closed on July 12.
With the clink of glasses filled with the best water east of the Rockies, local community leaders toasted the official commissioning of the Town of Amherst’s new water reservoir on July 23.
"This is a great day for our community,” Amherst Mayor David Kogon said. “This new reservoir has increased the water pressure in areas of the town that previously experienced low water pressure while also improving the fire flows throughout the town. The two tanks that make up the reservoir ensure the town will have adequate water storage for the foreseeable future.”
The mayor noted the $5.5-million project couldn’t have been accomplished without the participation of the federal and provincial governments, which through the joint federal-provincial Clean Water and Wastewater Fund provided 75 per cent of the funding.
