A review conducted by the Town of Amherst’s traffic authority is recommending the removal of 67 of the town’s 177 crosswalks.
The recommendation was presented in a report presented by the town’s traffic authority, Police Chief Ian Naylor, during the June 25 meeting of Amherst town council’s committee of the whole.
The review was started in 2017 after it became clear there was a lack of consistency in the application of crosswalks within the Town. Council tasked the traffic authority to assess the current process used to approve crosswalks, as well as conduct a review of the existing crosswalks and provide recommendations on the retention, removal, installation of new crosswalks and the type of pedestrian controls required.
The first visible signs of the Town of Amherst’s Active Transportation Plan began showing up on July 9 when on-street bicycle network markings were painted on McCully and Park streets.
The markings consist of two arrows and a bicycle. They indicate the designated cycling routes in the town and are intended to remind motorists and cyclists to share the road safely.
Over the next few months, the markings will also appear on East and West Victoria streets, Anson Avenue, Industrial Park Drive and Willow Street.
Amherst Police Chief Ian Naylor was recognized on July 5 for 40 years of exemplary service during a ceremony in Halifax that saw him presented with the second bar to his Police Exemplary Service Medal by Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc.
The medal, established by the federal government and approved by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982, is awarded for 20 years of service that is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency that serves as a model to others. Bars are awarded for 10 years additional service.
