The Amherst town council approved the realignment of several key areas within the organization as well as several amendments to its Salary Administration Policy during a special council session held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021.
The realignment was needed in order to fill some of the duties left vacant following the appointment of Jason MacDonald as the town’s chief administrative officer earlier this year.
A plaque bearing a photo of HMCS Amherst and the history of the Second World War corvette was presented recently to the Town of Amherst by 258 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Amherst in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Navy League of Canada.
The plaque was presented to the town by navy Lieutenant Stephen Rayworth, the corps’ commanding officer, and local Navy League of Canada representative Darrell Jones.
Mayor David Kogon has signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, to be National Truth and Reconciliation Day in the Town of Amherst.
“We have all learned in recent months of the tragedies that took place in residential schools across Canada,” Kogon, said as he signed the proclamation on behalf of the Amherst town council on Sept. 29, 2021.
“By taking this day to honour First Nations, Inuit and Metis children who lost their lives attending these residential schools as well as residential school survivors, their families and communities, we take an all-important step towards reconciliation.”
The Amherst town council appointed the first-ever members to two new committees when it met on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021.
Appointed to the newly established Town of Amherst Accessibility Advisory Committee for one-year terms as citizen appointees were George Godfrey, Joanne Hopper and Tammy Allen. They will be joined on the committee by councillors Dale Fawthrop and Leon Landry.
