The Amherst A.D. MacEachern Insurance Athletics have received a $500 community support grant from the Town of Amherst.
The team will use the grant to help cover the cost of hosting the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League championship tournament at the Robb’s Centennial Complex on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19, 2021.
Amherst firefighters battled a stubborn fire overnight Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, that left 15 residents without shelter.
The alarm was turned it at 7:20 p.m.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, smoke was billowing from the eaves of the two-storey, three-unit apartment building on Gerard Avenue. A window at the back of the building was also blown out.
The week of Sept. 6, 2021, to Sept. 10, 2021, has been proclaimed Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Week in the Town of Amherst.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a diagnostic term used to describe the impact on the brain and body of individuals who were exposed to alcohol prior to their birth, Mayor David Kogon noted on Sept. 3, 2021, as he signed the proclamation on behalf of Amherst town council.
“Individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder experience some degree of challenges in their daily living,” Kogon said, quoting the wording in the proclamation.
Amendments to the town’s Solid Waste Bylaw were given second reading by the Amherst town council during a special meeting held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021.
The amendments delete a section of the bylaw that currently prevents solid waste, such as residual waste, industrial/commercial/institutional waste and construction and demolition waste, generated within the Town of Amherst from being shipped outside the boundaries of Cumberland County.
