Mayor David Kogon has declared the month of September Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the Town of Amherst.
“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men,” Kogon said as he signed the proclamation on Sept. 3, 2019. “The survival rate for prostate cancer is nearly 100 per cent when detected early, yet statistics provided by Prostate Cancer Canada indicate 11 Canadian men die from prostate cancer every day.
Acadian flags will fly over the Town of Amherst on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, as local residents celebrate Acadian culture on National Acadian Day.
The flags will fly in front of the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre and in the park at the corner of Church and Albion streets.
Fire destroys vacant Amherst home
Fire destroyed a vacant, two-storey Amherst home at 97 Church St. during the early hours of Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019.
“We received the alarm at approximately 3:30 a.m.,” Capt. John Matthews, department spokesman said. “When firefighters arrived, the house was fully involved, particularly the back.”
Amherst firefighters fought a fire on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, that heavily damaged a home at 35 Elmwood Drive.
“Upon crews arriving on the scene, there was visible fire and smoke coming from the structure,” Fire Chief Greg Jones said. “We also learned that all occupants were out of the building and safe.
