The latest upgrade to the Amherst Lions Park will help local residents, especially those in the West Highlands area, beat the heat, Amherst Lions Club spokesman Rubin Millard said on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020, following the official opening of the park’s new $165,000 splash pad.
The splash pad, located at 39 Hickman St., is the latest addition to the five-year-old park that sits on the site of the former West Highlands Elementary School.
“Before the Lions Club started the park, we sent out a survey to the people of the area asking what they'd like to have in it,” Millard, chairman of the Amherst Lions Park Committee, said.
“A splash pad was something they asked for. It was the number 1 request made by the people who responded to our survey. So, it was incorporated into our development plan for the park.”
There is a new police officer patrolling the streets of Amherst.
Destiny Merriam joined the Amherst Police Department on Monday, July 13, 2020, as a part-time constable.
“Destiny has impressed us with her passion for policing,” Police Chief Dwayne Pike said, as he welcomed Merriam to the police department.
“She has the desire, the skills and compassion that make a good officer. We look forward to watching her grow as an officer and to working with her as we all strive to ensure Amherst is a great place to live, work and play.”
The lengthy delays travellers are experiencing trying to enter New Brunswick from Nova Scotia fly in the face of the spirit of the Atlantic bubble, say the mayors of Amherst, N.S., and Sackville, N.B.
“The spirit of the Atlantic bubble is to make the movement of individuals living within the four provinces – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island – simple and easy so people living within the bubble can do business and socialize,” Amherst Mayor David Kogon said on Thursday, July 16, 2020.
“That simply isn’t happening. People are experiencing one to two hour waits when they are trying to enter or re-enter New Brunswick from Nova Scotia and that is negatively impacting our businesses. The bubble is supposed to help stimulate the economy and it is not doing that. It is having the opposite effect.”
