More than $84,000 in Community Support Grants were handed out by the Town of Amherst to 21 local organizations during a ceremony at town hall on June 20.
"Amherst wouldn’t function without these very active community organizations. Their work, whether with children or adults, is priceless to this community,” Mayor David Kogon said prior to handing out the grants.
“The groups here today truly help make Amherst a great place to live, work and play.”
The Town of Amherst’s recently adopted Active Transportation Plan has been lauded by provincial health officials.
"The leadership from your municipal government to demonstrate your commitment to improving the health of the community should be applauded,” Dr. Ryan Sommers, medical officer of health for the Northern Zone of the Nova Scotia Health Authority, and Gary O’Toole, the director of public health for the Northern Zone, wrote in a letter the town received on June 20.
"On behalf of the Northern Zone Public Health Healthy Communities team, Nova Scotia Health Authority, we would like to extend our congratulations and support to the Town of Amherst on their recent approval of the Active Transportation Plan.
Heads up!
Amherst police officers are on the lookout this summer for young cyclists, skateboarders, in-line skaters and scooter drivers who have their helmets on.
If they pull you over, you will be given a coupon for a free ice-cream treat from either McDonald’s or Dairy Queen.
“Our objective is to reward children who are serving as good examples for their peers by wearing their helmet properly, which includes it being buckled up,” said Const. Tom Wood, the co-ordinator of the local police department’s annual Heads Up! Helmets On! program.
