The week of June 13, 2022, to June 18, 2022, has been proclaimed Pride Week in the Town of Amherst.
“Amherst is committed to bringing together our diverse community in an inclusive and equitable manner,” Mayor David Kogon said on June 10, 2022, as he signed the proclamation on behalf of the Amherst town council.
“By proclaiming Pride Week, the town is recognizing that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Amherst town council approved the 2022-23 tax rates, operating budgets and capital budgets for the 2022-23 fiscal year when it met on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
Council set the overall tax rate at $1.67 per $100 of assessment for residential and resource properties and $4.47 per $100 of assessment for commercial properties. These are unchanged from the previous year.
They also approved a general operating budget of slightly more than $19 million, a water utility operating budget of slightly more than $2.4 million and a combined water and general capital budget of slightly more than $10 million.
The Town of Amherst has proclaimed June 8, 2022, to be World Oceans Day in the community.
“The oceans play an important role in counteracting climate change and protecting them will help us win the battle against global warming,” Mayor David Kogon said on Thursday, June 7, 2022, as he signed the proclamation on behalf of the Amherst town council.
The Town of Amherst’s recently created Accessibility Advisory Committee is seeking your help.
“We are seeking public input into accessibility issues and the barriers experienced by citizens in our community who face some type of impairment – cognitive or physical – that affects their ability to fully participate in municipal programs and/or services,” Dale Fawthrop, committee chairperson, said, on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.
“Public input is being sought via a survey, which we are launching today. It is available on the town’s website at https://amherst.ca/accessibility-initiative.html. Paper copies of the survey will also be available at the Amherst town hall.”
