The newly elected Mayor and Council of the Town of Amherst will be officially sworn into office on Nov. 3, 2020, at 7 p.m., at the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions on gathering size, we will only be able to accommodate 25 members of the public. Those wishing to attend must pre-register by calling 902-667-6527 and providing their name and contact information.
Space is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Unfortunately, we will not be able to admit any who do not pre-register.
The event will be recorded and a video will be available the next day.
A $500 Community Support Grant from the Town of Amherst is helping three local charitable organizations provide young Halloween ghosts, goblins and other scary creatures an alternative way to trick or treat.
“We appreciate the way the YMCA of Cumberland, the Four Fathers Library and Maggie’s Place have come together to create the Trail of Treats, which will provide a different way for our little ones to celebrate Halloween during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Deputy-Mayor Sheila Christie said as she and Mayor David Kogon presented the grant to Trail of Treats organization representatives Ellen Gaudet and Jena Bowes on Oct. 26, 2020.
The Town of Amherst’s Traffic Authority has approved the installation of a new crosswalk at the intersection of Park and Mission streets.
In addition, the authority has directed that yield signs at the Mission-Park Street, Mission-York Street, Mission-Hill Street and Mission Street-Snowden Avenue intersections be replaced with stop signs.
“These changes will increase safety in this area of town for both pedestrians and motorists,” Police Chief Dwayne Pike, the town’s traffic authority, said on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020.
The walking track at the Amherst Stadium will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020, but it won’t be walking as usual because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have had to implement several changes in walking protocols in order to ensure the town follows provincial public health orders, protects the health of walkers and stadium staff and recognizes the unique characteristics of our stadium,” Jason MacDonald, Deputy-CAO/Operations, said.
