The Town of Amherst has proclaimed the month of February as African Heritage Month.
Noting this year’s theme is Seas of Struggle – African Peoples from Shore to Shore, Mayor David Kogon said we must all understand the role the sea played in the history of people of African Decent.
The Town of Amherst has taken another step towards helping this town become a greener community.
It has installed two, electric-vehicle, Level 2, charging stations just off Laplanche Street, in the parking lot behind the Amherst town hall, at a cost of about $23,000.
The Town of Amherst has accepted an accessibility strategy that will guide it into the future as this diverse town strives to be a more equitable and inclusive community that is barrier free.
The strategy was approved by the Amherst town council at its Jan, 23, 2023, council session upon the recommendation of the town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee.
“We are committed to working towards a community where every citizen, every visitor, no matter their age, ability or gender, has equitable access to our buildings, programs and services,” Coun. Dale Fawthrop, the accessibility advisory committee’s chair, said.
The Amherst town council moved forward with its efforts to provide affordable and/or supportive housing in this community on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, when it approved transferring the ownership of a town-owned property to the Cumberland Homelessness and Housing Support Association.
The town purchased the property, located at 8/10 Prince Arthur St., for $26,000 last year via a tax sale with the intent of making it available for affordable and/or supportive housing.
