At a meeting on health care in Springhill on Dec. 8, 2022, Cumberland region mayors were disappointed more information related to local efforts pertaining to health care around physician recruitment and retention were not highlighted.
“It was disappointing the members of the community who were at the meeting were not enlightened about the efforts underway in the Cumberland region as a joint effort between our three municipalities and volunteers within our communities,” Cumberland County Mayor Murray Scott said.
“It’s why Amherst Mayor David Kogon and I feel we need to speak out to let people know there is a concerted effort throughout the Cumberland region to recruit new physicians and non-medical health-care professionals and to retain the ones who are already here.”
The Amherst town council gave second and final reading on Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, to an amendment to the town’s land-use bylaw that will rezone a 2.4-acre parcel of land off Paradise Avenue to a general residential zone from a low-density residential zone.
The amendment will allow four, four-unit townhouses to be constructed on the site. The units are similar to ones already in the area.
The Town of Amherst is welcoming news the provincial government will fund an emergency shelter this winter.
“It is so pleasing to learn the Department of Community Services is providing financial support to our community shelter,” Mayor David Kogon said on behalf of the Amherst town council.
The Town of Amherst, operators of the Amherst Stadium, has joined the Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia in issuing an anti-racism declaration.
“We believe our diverse community must be inclusive and equitable to everyone,” Mayor David Kogon said. “It’s why we established our Inclusion, Diversity and Equity committee and its why we’re joining the association and Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation in their efforts to bring about change in attitudes towards racism in recreation facilities by erecting a sign in the Amherst Stadium that contains an anti-racism declaration.”
