The ongoing investigation by the Amherst Police Department into a fatal house fire in Amherst on Dec. 21, 2019, has resulted in charges being laid against two people.
Bryanna Ackles, 25, of Amherst was charged with: break and enter, possession of stolen goods, possession of break and enter tools, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and breach of a recognizance.
Two suspicious fires that occurred early Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, are being investigated by Amherst police and fire departments.
The first alarm, turned in at about 2:48 a.m., reported a possible brush fire on Clarence Street.
Atlantic Windows has become the first local business to take advantage of the Town of Amherst’s Commercial Development Support Program Bylaw.
The firm recently signed a Commercial Phase-In Assessment Agreement with the town that will see them receive a break of about $130,000 on their commercial property taxes over the next decade following a major expansion to their plant on Chandler Road.
The bylaw was put in place by Amherst town council in September 2017 as a way to stimulate commercial investment within the community. It enables the town to rebate up to 50 per cent of the tax revenue generated by an investment of $25,000 or more over a period of 10 years.
Tamara Porter has been appointed as the acting business development officer for the Town of Amherst, effective Dec. 20.
Porter will be filling the position while Rebecca Taylor, the current business development officer, is off on medical leave. Taylor is anticipated to return to her duties in mid-February 2020.
