Miller Waste Systems Inc. will continue to pick up the Town of Amherst’s residential solid waste following a decision by the town council on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, to award the firm with a new five-year deal.
The current contract with Miller was set to expire on March 31 and the new contract goes into effect a day later.
The protection of the Isthmus of Chignecto was the topic of discussion when Amherst Mayor David Kogon and local historian Bill Casey met with Premier Tim Houston and Cumberland-South MLA Tory Ruston on Jan. 18, 2023.
“We met with the premier for about 45 minutes,” Kogon said. “During that time, we outlined in our presentation the threat the isthmus is facing due to rising sea levels and an increase in extreme weather events, as well as our concern the steps needed to prevent the threat from becoming a reality were not being implemented in a timely fashion.”
Four citizens are seeking to fill a vacant seat on the Amherst town council.
Bill Archer, Charlie Chambers, Allan (Max) Davidson and Vaughn Martin are vying to fill the seat that became vacant with October’s resignation of Coun. Sheila Christie.
The Town of Amherst continues to be a great place to live, work and play, says Amherst Mayor David Kogon.
The mayor made the comment on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, while giving his annual state-of-the-town address to the Amherst Rotary Club.
“We continue to be in a strong financial position,” Kogon told the Rotarians, as he pointed out the tax rates for residential, resource and commercial properties during the current fiscal year were unchanged from the previous year – despite inflationary pressures.
