The Town of Ahmerst hosted a flag raising and proclamation ceremony on Monday morning to mark the beginning of African Heritage Month.
Mayor Small read the official proclamation, then those gathered heard a message from Tammy Gero - Vice-Chair of the Board of the Cumberland African Nova Scotian Association (CANSA) before raising the Pan-African flag.
Many thanks to all who attended - members of our community, CANSA, Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs (ANSA), Town Councillors and staff people, members of the Amherst Police Department, the RCMP, and other community groups and organizations - your presence was greatly appreciated.
Then, it was off to the Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre for our African Heritage Month reception.
We first took the opportunity to have our proclamation signed by Mayor Small, representatives from the Cumberland African Nova Scotian Association (CANSA) and African Nova Scotian Affairs (ANSA). We heard more from officials, who shared messages celebrating the importance of African Heritage Month, then we viewed an inspirational video from the Honourable Twila Grosse - Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs and Minister of the Public Service Commission.
Finally, this year's African Heritage Month poster design was unveiled, beautifully representing the theme of "Legacy in Action: Celebrating Black Brilliance."
Thank you to all who attended today's events and enjoyed a luncheon among friends and colleagues.
